What
is Oral History..?
|
|
Oral
history is a method of gathering and preserving historical information
through recorded interviews with participants in past events and
ways of life. It is both the oldest type of historical inquiry,
predating the written word, and one of the most modern, initiated
with tape recorders in the 1940s. |
| Why
the Brain Club..? |
| |
Aside
from the cultural significance of the Brain both musically and artistically
- this venue was a very special place for many of those who passed
through the doors. Careers were built at the Brain. Weddings were
celebrated. Deceased friends were remembered. Art happened. Fashion
exploded. Seduction ruled. Sedition rallied. Disenfranchised British
youth found a place to call home. |
How
does this Oral History Project work..? |
| |
From
September 2006 onwards we will attempt to interview at least 75-100
of those inviduals who were Brain Club regulars. This will include
DJs, promoters, famous people, infamous people, celebrities, ne'er-do-wells,
the succesful, the not-so succesful. We will record your stories,
your anecdotes, the tears, the laughter... Then by cutting transcribed
interviews together, we will build a significant historical portrait
the Brain Club and London at the time... |
| What
makes THIS different..? |
| |
We
are deploying the latest technology to create oral history... All
of our interviews will be done via the Skype VOIP system. To our
knowledge nobody has ever used Skype to create oral history before...
These Skype interviews will be recorded directly into an Apple Powerbook
via Ecamm Call Recorder software... Basically the interviews become
MP3s for transcription. |
| How
can you help..? |
| |
Were
you at the Brain ever? Do you know somebody who was? Friends with
Oakey, or Bicknell, or Harvey, or Chocci? In Iceland with The Mondays?
In New York with IF? We want your stories, reminisces and memories...
Send us an email now to schedule an interview... Pass the word... |
